EC 05: Refrigerator Cabinet Sensor Fault

EC 05 tells you the refrigerator compartment sensor on a later 600 Series gave the control an open, shorted or jumping reading. Until it is repaired, the control cannot tell how cold the fresh-food side really is. Sub-Zero Repair Redmond tests the sensor and its wiring; call (425) 905-2822.

Check first
  • The refrigerator readout: EE where the temperature belongs, with SERVICE flashing, is this same fault showing live.
  • Whether EC 50 sits in memory beside it; mention both when you call.
  • Food in the fresh-food side, checked with a separate thermometer while the display cannot be trusted.

  • Connections and continuity traced along the wire from the sensor back to the control board.
  • Sensor resistance measured at 32°F against the range in Sub-Zero's service manual, and the sensor replaced if it is out.
  • Stored codes cleared once the repair is done, so any new fault stands out.

What the sensor does

The refrigerator compartment sensor is the later control’s reading of the air the food sits in. The display shows it, and the control judges when the fresh-food side needs cooling by it. When that reading goes open, shorted or erratic, the control stores EC 05.

Seen before anyone reads memory

The display can show the fault first: EE in place of the refrigerator temperature, with SERVICE flashing, which Sub-Zero’s manual ties to this sensor.

Why it comes ahead of EC 50

A sensor giving a false reading can keep the refrigerator compressor running. That is why the service manual’s EC 50 list opens by sending the technician to EC 05 whenever both are stored.
