Sub-Zero Freezer Frosting Over Again: Reading the Defrost Circuit
Frost sheeting the back panel of a Sub-Zero freezer within days of clearing it is a defrost fault, not a door problem. How to read the circuit, what usually fails, and when the part is worth ordering.

You cleared the frost off the back panel three weeks ago. It is back, thicker than before, and the freezer has started drifting warm even though the compressor seems to be running constantly. Nearly every Redmond call that starts this way ends at the same place: the defrost circuit has stopped doing its job, and the evaporator is now packed in ice it cannot melt on its own.
This is a repairable, well-understood failure. It is also one of the faults most often misdiagnosed as “the freezer is finished” — so it is worth understanding what is actually happening before anyone quotes you for a new cabinet.
Why frost builds in the first place
Every time the freezer door opens, humid room air comes in. That moisture condenses on the coldest surface in the cabinet, which is the evaporator coil behind the rear panel. On a healthy unit the control runs a defrost cycle every eight to twelve hours of compressor runtime: a heater near the coil warms it just above freezing, the accumulated rime melts, and the water runs down a drain tube into a pan near the compressor where it evaporates away.
That means frost is not a failure in itself. Frost that never leaves is. If the back panel is carrying a sheet you can chip at, the melt half of that cycle has stopped happening.
Redmond makes it slightly worse than average. Homes here run humid through the autumn and spring, and a kitchen that opens onto a covered deck moves a lot of damp air past an open freezer door. That accelerates the build-up, but it does not cause it — a working defrost circuit handles our climate without complaint.
The three parts that actually fail
There are only a handful of components in the circuit, and on Sub-Zero built-ins they fail in a fairly predictable order.
The defrost heater. A resistive element clamped to or threaded through the evaporator. When it goes open circuit, nothing melts. This is the single most common cause and it is a straightforward test: an ohmmeter across the element should read a sensible resistance, typically in the tens of ohms. An open reading means a dead heater and there is no ambiguity about it.
The defrost terminator or thermostat. A safety that opens when the coil warms enough, so the heater does not run indefinitely. When it fails open, the heater never gets power even though the control is calling for defrost. It reads open at room temperature by design on some designs, so it needs testing cold — a detail that trips up general appliance technicians who do not work on these units often.
The thermistor or sensor feeding the control board. If the board is being told the coil is already warm, it will not initiate a cycle at all. A thermistor is tested by resistance against a temperature chart; drift of a few hundred ohms is enough to skew the logic.
Control boards do fail, but they are far down this list. If a shop opens with “you need a new board” before a meter has touched the heater, get a second look.
What you can check before calling anyone
Some of this is genuinely worth doing yourself, and it costs nothing but time.
- Look at where the frost is. An even sheet across the whole rear panel points at defrost. Frost concentrated around the door seal, or only on one side, points at a gasket or an alignment problem instead.
- Check the door gasket. Close the door on a dollar bill and pull. If it slides out with no drag anywhere along the seal, the gasket has lost its grip and you are pumping humid air in continuously. That is a different, cheaper repair.
- Confirm the drain is not blocked. Water pooling under the freezer basket or ice building at the floor of the cabinet, rather than on the coil, means the melt water has nowhere to go. A blocked drain tube presents very differently from a dead heater.
- Run a full manual defrost. Empty the freezer, switch the unit off at the control, and leave the door open for a full 24 hours with towels down. If the freezer then holds correct temperature for a few weeks before frosting again, you have confirmed a defrost circuit fault rather than a sealed-system problem.
What we would not suggest is chipping ice off the coil with anything metal. The evaporator tubing is thin aluminium and a puncture turns a two-hundred-dollar repair into a sealed-system job.
When it stops being a defrost problem
Two patterns take this out of defrost territory and into something more serious.
If the freezer never reaches temperature even with the coil completely clear and the compressor running, you are looking at a refrigerant charge or compressor issue rather than an ice problem. Frost that forms on the suction line outside the cabinet, or a coil that only frosts across the bottom third, points the same way.
If the frost returns within days of a full manual defrost and the gasket seals properly, and testing shows the heater and terminator are both good, the control board or its wiring harness is genuinely implicated. That is rare, but it happens on integrated columns where the harness runs through a hinge and works itself loose over years of door movement.
Either of those is worth a proper diagnostic visit. A defrost component swap is usually a single visit with a stocked part, and the unit is back in spec before the technician leaves — but nobody should be ordering parts off a guess when the tests take twenty minutes.
Follow-up questions
- How often should a Sub-Zero freezer defrost itself?
- Roughly every eight to twelve hours of compressor runtime on most built-in platforms. You should never see standing frost on the rear evaporator panel between cycles — a thin rime that disappears is normal, a growing sheet is not.
- Will manually defrosting the freezer fix it permanently?
- No. A full 24-hour manual defrost clears the ice and buys you a few weeks, but if the heater, terminator or sensor has failed the frost comes straight back. Manual defrosting is a diagnostic step and a stopgap, not a repair.
- Is a frosted-up freezer worth repairing on an older unit?
- Usually yes. Defrost components are inexpensive relative to the cabinet and the repair is well inside a single visit. Replacement only makes sense when the frost is a symptom of a leaking sealed system on a cabinet already past twenty-five years.
