EC 40: Excessive Freezer Compressor Run
EC 40 means the freezer compressor on a later 600 Series ran too long to hold temperature. The cause is usually airflow: a door or drawer not closing, a matted condenser, a stalled fan. Sub-Zero Repair Redmond reads the stored codes and fixes the cause; call (425) 905-2822.

Why the compressor ran long
The freezer compressor on a 600 Series runs until the freezer sensor reads cold enough. Anything that stops the freezer getting there keeps it running: warm air through an unsealed door, heat that cannot leave a dusty condenser, or cold air a stalled fan is not moving across the coil.
Sub-Zero’s service manual works through it in that order — door, condenser, fans, sensor, lights — and only then the sealed system. It also sends the technician to any defrost or freezer-sensor code stored alongside EC 40 first, because those can cause it.
What the display shows meanwhile
Often just a flashing SERVICE light and a freezer a few degrees warm. The code is read from the keys in Diagnostic Mode.
